Dementia-Friendly Neighbourhoods Study, Singapore

Singapore |
Asia - Singapore

The incidence of dementia rises with an aging population, making dementia-friendly neighbourhoods essential for allowing individuals with dementia to age in place and delay institutionalization, enhancing their quality of life. The Dementia-Friendly Neighbourhoods Study employs an innovative design-thinking approach to create design principles tailored to Singapore’s unique high-density, high-rise urban and socio-cultural context.

The study includes a novel research methodology to gather insights from people with dementia through non-verbal communication tools, collecting over 2,000 data points to understand local needs and challenges. It also involves community engagement and co-creation, bringing together stakeholders from community, healthcare, design, and service sectors to build a supportive ecosystem.

The design principles and prototypes, derived from extensive research, were validated through proof-of-concept testing and post-implementation reviews. The initiative will be scaled through policy integration, upgrading works, and capability development, ensuring a broad and lasting impact
