Ramallah’s Forum of Expertise “Active Aging Initiatives”

Ramallah

The Ramallah Municipality’s “Forum of Expertise” addresses the global aging population challenge by creating a community center for improvement of elderly quality of life. It tackles social isolation, health disparities, and boosts community participation through engagement, well-being, and fostering a sense of belonging. Nestled in Ramallah’s Old City, the Forum empowers self-sufficient seniors with volunteer-led workshops, public-private partnerships, and intergenerational connections. This model redefines elderly care, encouraging seniors to lead and share wisdom, supported by the municipality and community.

Running for six years, the initiative has improved the lives of Ramallah’s elderly, with 92% of surveyed participants reporting increased social connection and well-being. The model, adopted by two other cities and generating interest from several more, minimizes resource dependency and is adaptable. It integrates volunteer leadership, municipal support, and community engagement in an exemplary way, promoting health equity and social justice through partnerships with local youth organizations and subsidized health screenings. The Forum’s diverse activities cater to varied needs, fostering social connection and healthy aging, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
