This inclusive participatory design initiative, developed in cooperation with public authorities in Ahmednagar, India, aims to provide quality affordable housing for 298 families, transforming Sanjaynagar from a slum to a thriving neighborhood. The project reimagines slums into healthy, climate-resilient communities, setting new standards for housing quality for economically marginalized groups. Features such as designed courtyards, rooftop gardens and sustainable materials promote social cohesion and wellness. Open spaces, sun breakers, and native plants help mitigate heat, while integrated climate solutions have raised groundwater levels, and well-engineered sewage and garbage systems improve soil conditions.
The participatory planning process and a blended financial model, that leverages various funding sources, allow the community to guide the outcomes. The project advances gender equity with 50% homeownership for women and provides financial literacy training for residents. In 2022, 33 families moved into the first residential building. This initiative exemplifies a regenerative approach to slum redevelopment, significantly improving the quality of life for all involved.
