The Gendered City advances gender equity in urban environments by addressing biases and inequalities that restrict women’s access to opportunities, resources, and safe public spaces. The goal is to create inclusive cities where all genders thrive equally.
A key objective is raising awareness of gender disparities through FEM. Academy, highlighting challenges faced by women and marginalized groups, and fostering understanding of gender-responsive urban planning. The Gendered City also promotes collaboration via the FEM.DESign network, which includes city experts, academics, urban designers, economists, and data analysts. This network facilitates the exchange of ideas and solutions to address gender disparities.
Additionally, the initiative develops practical tools for feminist city design through the FEM.DESign Toolbox, aiding practitioners in integrating gender perspectives into urban planning. To further its impact, the Gendered City is expanding through local chapters in cities like Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and Bogotá, broadening its reach globally.
This initiative promotes social justice in urban contexts recognizing the intersectionality of gender with other forms of inequality and marginalization and addressing these intersections through innovative and participatory initiatives with the capacity for change.
