This Initiative brings innovative solutions to Minawao Refugee Camp in Cameroon that UNHCR has developed and tested in other operations. This includes creating shelters from locally produced bricks, providing sustainable cooking alternatives through efficient stoves, and engaging in reforestation with Land Life Company’s support. Through this integrated approach, the project has demonstrated that ‘going green’ reduces the environmental footprint of humanitarian efforts, cuts costs, and – most importantly – improves the health and well-being of both refugees and host communities.
The results achieved over the past two years have significantly improved the quality of thousands of refugees’ lives. Across Minawao and its surroundings, we have laid strong foundations for a greener, more sustainable, environmentally friendly future. Together with refugees and local communities, 40,000 trees have been planted to reforest severely degraded land. Also, more than 30,000 refugees now have sustainable housing and over 37,000 refugees have access to sustainable cooking alternatives. Moreover, this project provided shade food, and livelihood opportunities contributing to the health of the refugees.
