Vienna’s Smart Climate City Strategy, adopted in 2022 by the City Council, is the city’s overarching sustainability plan aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2040. It focuses on providing high quality of life through social and technological innovations while conserving resources. The strategy includes 74 goals across 11 areas, addressing current challenges with a holistic approach supported by governance and subsequent strategy documents.
A pioneer in the adoption of smart city strategies, Vienna focuses on social inclusion and quality of life. Key goals include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, leading in innovation and digitalization, and improving green and transportation infrastructure.
Since its adoption, the strategy has managed to reduce 85,000 tons of CO2 and has implemented multiple climate adaptation projects. In mobility, public transport and bicycle infrastructure have expanded. The elimination of gas as a heating source is also key to reducing emissions, with significant investments in district heating and support for homeowners to transition to alternative systems.
