The first edition of The Bay Awards was celebrated on October 9 at Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the symbol of Bilbao’s resurgence and worldwide example of how visionary urban planning projects can bring about a radical change in the development of a city and a huge improvement in the quality of life of its inhabitants.
The Bay Awards are the result of the work and effort of Bilbao Metropoli 30 and its partners to recognise good practice in the development of cities and urban strategy worldwide. These awards are more than just about winning, it is about learning, sharing and being inspirational.
In this first edition, more than 100 projects answered our call. Large projects and more modest initiatives. Large cities and small communities, from which 15 projects and cities were short listed.

The award
The refractory bricks that form the basis of these awards were produced by defunct companies that forever marked the identity and history of the city of Bilbao and its neighbouring municipalities. After the industry closed down, some of their bricks ended up in our bay and were washed out to sea by the current. They are a firm testimony to our industrial past.
On these bases, the sea. The Bay of Biscay. A place where land and sea come together, symbolically suggesting a place of mixture, encounter and diversity. Also, a place of protection and refuge, like The Bay Awards, which aspire to become that protected platform for debate and analysis of our urban challenges for the future, in the face of the urgencies, distractions and pressures of the short term.
This precious award has been designed by the sculptor Iranzu Gamboa. Multidisciplinary artist. She is also a member of the Bilbao Metropoli 30 team.
